Working Hours
General
Standard working hours within Liberia are 40 hours a week, 8 hours per day for adults.
Overtime
-
Maximum Ordinary Hours (DWA Section 17.1): The standard work limit is 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week. Overtime is any hour worked in excess of these limits.
-
Absolute Daily Cap (DWA Section 17.5): The total working hours, including overtime, generally cannot exceed 12 hours per day.
-
Weekly Overtime Cap (DWA Section 17.5): The maximum amount of overtime an employee may be required to work is 5 hours per week, averaged over a reference period of four months.
-
Rest Periods: Employees are entitled to a daily rest period of at least 12 consecutive hours between shifts and a weekly rest period of at least 36 consecutive hours (typically including Sunday).
-
Exemptions: Senior managerial positions and those in specific industries (like seasonal work) may be exempt from the standard overtime limits.
Mandatory Overtime Pay Rates
Overtime compensation is mandatory. The minimum premium rate is based on the day the extra work is performed.
| Day/Condition | Minimum Compensation Rate (Statutory) | Total Pay Rate | Notes |
| Normal Overtime (Working Days) | +50% of the regular hourly wage. | 150% | Applies to hours worked beyond 8/day or 48/week. |
| Public Holiday Work | +100% of the regular hourly wage (Double pay). | 200% | Applies to all hours worked on an official public holiday. |
| Weekly Rest Day | +50% of the regular hourly wage. | 150% | If work on the rest day is considered overtime (i.e., beyond 48 hours/week), this is the minimum statutory premium. |
Compensation Method (Time Off in Lieu):
-
The employer and employee may agree in writing to compensate overtime work with paid time off instead of the premium payment, provided the employee still receives their ordinary rate of remuneration for the time off (DWA Section 17.5).
Payroll
The payroll cycle in Liberia is generally a monthly cycle, with wages paid by the last working day of each month. However, some employees who are paid on an hourly, weekly, and daily basis are paid every two weeks.

Sick Days
Liberia offers 15 days of paid sick leave per year, likely subject to medical certification.
Maternity Leave
Expectant mothers are entitled to up to a 14 weeks of paid maternity leave.
Paternity Leave
In Liberia, employed fathers are entitled to five days of unpaid paternity leave to be taken at the time of their child’s birth. This leave cannot be taken before the mother’s confinement and must be used within one month following childbirth, unless exceptional circumstances justify a delay. In cases where the father has more than one wife, he is required to declare which child and spouse the leave applies to, ensuring the benefit is applied to a single family unit for each birth.
Parental Leave
The country does not provide a statutory parental leave scheme that allows both parents to share time off for child-rearing. However, Liberia’s labor law does contain a family care leave provision. Under this rule, employees are entitled to up to five days of paid leave per year to care for or support an immediate family member facing personal illness, injury, or an unexpected emergency.
Bereavement leave
Employees in Liberia are entitled to bereavement leave. This entitlement provides five days of paid leave per year in the event of the death of a family member.
Childcare leave
For working mothers, the law includes specific childcare-related protections in the form of paid nursing breaks for breastfeeding. Up until the child reaches six months of age, a mother is entitled either to a daily reduction of working hours by 60 minutes or to two separate 30-minute breaks during the workday, without loss of pay. These provisions are designed to support maternal and child health, and to help mothers balance work responsibilities with childcare needs during the early months after birth.

Termination
Termination Process
In Liberia, the legal framework governing employment termination is primarily found in the Decent Work Act of 2015. Employment can be ended by either the employee or the employer, but specific procedures and protections apply depending on the nature of the termination.
When an employee decides to resign, they are required to provide written notice, with the amount of notice depending on their length of service. However, in cases of serious misconduct, the employer is permitted to terminate the employment immediately, without any notice.
For employer-initiated termination without cause, such as redundancy or business restructuring, a written notice must be given. The required notice periods are:
-
7 days during the probationary period, or as defined in the contract.
-
2 weeks if the employee has served between 3 and 6 months.
-
3 weeks if the tenure is between 6 and 12 months.
-
4 weeks for employees with more than one year of continuous service.
Employers may opt to pay compensation in lieu of providing notice, offering an equivalent amount of wages instead.
In cases of termination with cause, typically due to gross misconduct or violation of workplace rules, the employer may proceed without notice, provided the misconduct justifies such action. However, procedural fairness and documentation are still essential to support the termination.
| Salary payment interval / date | Final payment on termination | Bank account/payment method requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Wages must be paid at regular intervals and not more than one month after the end of the wage period. | Upon termination, employer must pay wages and other amounts due (e.g., severance where applicable). | Wages must be paid in money (legal tender). Wage payment via bank account deposit is permitted if agreed, but law does not mandate payment only via bank account for all employees in the accessible sources. |
Notice Period
In Liberia, the notice period depends on the employee’s length of continuous service and whether they are still in probation. Under the Decent Work Act (2015), the minimum statutory notice periods are:
-
During probation – 7 days’ written notice.
-
After probation, up to 6 months of service – 2 weeks’ written notice.
-
6 months to 1 year of service – 3 weeks’ written notice.
-
More than 1 year of service – 4 weeks’ written notice.
Employers can either have the employee serve this notice or pay salary in lieu of notice, which must equal what the employee would have earned during the notice period.
Severance Pay
When an employee is terminated without cause—due to economic reasons like redundancy or business closure—they are generally entitled to severance pay. The standard formula provides four weeks’ salary for each completed year of service. This amount is calculated using the employee’s regular wage at the time of termination, including basic salary and certain allowances.
It’s important to note that severance pay is not required if the employee resigns or is dismissed for serious misconduct. In such cases, the employer must still fulfill other legal obligations like providing notice or compensation in lieu.
Probation Period
During the probation period, either party may terminate the employment contract with at least 7 days’ written notice, unless otherwise specified in the contract. No severance pay is required for terminations that occur during probation.
Immigration
Foreign nationals must obtain both an entry visa and a work permit before starting work in Liberia. Entry visas—single-entry (up to 3 months) or multiple-entry (1–3 years)—are issued by Liberian embassies/consulates or, from March 2025, via an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) system.
Work permits, issued by the Ministry of Labour, are employer-sponsored, job-specific, and valid for one year (renewable). Employers must show proof that no qualified Liberian is available for the role, provide business registration documents, a job offer letter, and the worker’s passport, CV, and photos. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks.
Employers are responsible for permit applications, renewals, reporting changes, and keeping immigration records. Employees must comply with all visa/permit conditions, maintain valid documents, and register with immigration upon arrival.
Minimum Wage
As of 2025, the statutory minimum wage is LRD 15,000 per month (approximately USD 80–90, depending on exchange rates). This rate applies across most sectors and is mandatory for all employers. Some older sources list lower figures, but the updated amount is recognized in current labor references.
MINIMUM WAGE (PER MONTH)
VAT
Liberia applies a Goods and Services Tax (GST), which functions similarly to VAT, at a standard rate of 10 % on most goods and services. Certain categories, such as exports and specific essential goods, may be zero-rated or exempt. Businesses exceeding the registration threshold must register, file returns, and remit GST in accordance with the Liberia Revenue Authority’s schedule.
