What are authorization retries?

Authorization retries when merchants or payment service providers try to process a payment after the initial attempt fails. This can occur during online payments, subscriptions, and recurring billing models. Retries often increase the chances of a transaction going through by trying different methods.

Reasons for failed payments

System outages: Overloading or technical issues can cause outages with payment processing systems.
Network issues: Weak internet connectivity can disconnect communication between the customer, business, and payment processor.
Software errors: Bugs or malfunctions in the payment software can cause failed transactions.
Security breaches: Cyberattacks and security breaches lead to failed payments.
Insufficient funds: Insufficient funds result in failed payments, especially for recurring payments.

Incorrect information: Payments get declined if card details are entered incorrectly.
Expired cards: Using an expired card leads to payment failure.
Exceeded credit limit: If an individual exceeds their credit card limit, the issuing bank will decline the transaction.
Fraudulent activity: Banks can decline suspicious transactions to protect the cardholder from fraud.
Outdated payment system: Outdated or incompatible payment systems can affect transaction success.
Billing errors: Incorrect or incomplete billing information can result in declines.
Weak fraud prevention measures: Weak security measures leave businesses susceptible to fraudulent transactions, chargebacks, and payment failures.
Card issuer problems: System maintenance or card deactivation can lead to payment failures.
International transactions: International transactions can trigger declines or require additional verification before successful payment authorization.
Recurring payment errors: Issues with automatic billing systems or outdated payment information causes failed transactions for subscriptions or recurring services.

Why are authorization retries important?

  • Reduces client churn by removing payment hurdles
  • Improves cash flow by earning revenue from initially failed transactions
  • Allows the company to make payment improvements to reduce decline’s
  • Limits clients’ loss of services if the payment didn’t work the first time
  • Increases successful transaction rates

How do retries work?

Automated retries

Many payment processing systems offer automated retry tools that analyze the failures and suggest the optimal time and method for retries.

Smart retries

Technologically advanced systems leverage machine learning to analyze historical transaction data, issuer behavior, and so on to identify optimal times for payment retries.

Customizable retry rules

Businesses can customize retry rules per failure type, number of retries, and the time interval between attempts.

Alternative payment methods

A failed transaction on one payment method might trigger a retry using an alternative method if the customer has multiple options on file.

How many times will a company retry a payment?

This depends on the payment method. For ACH payment, the National Automated Clearing House Association guidelines suggest companies try three times to withdraw funds. Different banks might have specific rules, so it’s crucial to understand their specific guidelines.
