What is the BNPL concept?

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is a short-term financing plan that allows consumers to make purchases and pay for them in installments. BNPL is also known as a point-of-sale (POS) installment loan that doesn’t charge interest. Consumers can make purchases using BNPL services offered by brick-and-mortars, online retailers, or through third-party apps.

How does BNPL work?

Buy now, pay later programs have varying terms and conditions, but they generally offer short-term loans with fixed payments, and zero interest or additional charges. Customers know each payment amount upfront, which is always the same. Individuals can use a BNPL app or BNPL options through their credit card.
If approved for BNPL purchasers make a small down payment, such as 25% of the overall item price. They’ll then pay off the remaining amount in interest-free installments, usually over a few weeks or months.
Payments can be deducted automatically from your debit card, bank account, or credit card. The main difference between BNPL and a credit card is that credit cards typically charge interest on balances carried over to the next billing cycle.

What are the pros and cons of BNPL?

There are upsides and downsides to BNPL. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros

  • BNPL is a convenient way to pay for purchases over time
  • Comes with no interest or has lower interest rates than credit cards
  • It’s not necessary to have a good credit score to qualify
  • Fast approval

Cons

  • Payments can be hard to track
  • Missing or late payments carry late fees and could damage credit score
  • No rewards or cash back on purchases
  • Payments may continue even if the item is returned
  • If users can’t afford payments, BNPL can put them in debt, especially if they’re making payments for several products

Who is eligible for BNPL?

To use BNPL, individuals must be 18 years old or older. The BNPL provider typically conducts a soft credit check (which has no impact on the user’s credit score) when they apply. Approval or denial typically takes only seconds.

What is the average credit score for BNPL users?

The average score for BNPL users is between 580 and 669. Consumers with higher scores were less likely than those with scores below 580 to borrow with BNPL.

Is there a catch to BNPL?

BNPL products are credit products and take regular repayments from bank accounts or credit cards, just like any other loan. As with credit cards, users are charged late fees if they miss a payment. The BNPL product will grow expensive if the repayments aren’t paid on time.
