What is a conversion rate?

A conversion rate is the ratio between two currencies in the foreign exchange market. It describes how much of one currency is needed to trade for the same value of another currency.
All currencies’ conversion rates fluctuate in forex markets. Conversion rates are essential for international trade, travel, and investment. They determine different currencies’ value as well as impact the cost of goods, services, and financial transactions across borders.

Understanding Conversion Rates

A conversion rate is the amount of one currency that’s needed for a unit of another currency. For example, if the conversion rate between the U.S. dollar and the euro is .92, 1 EUR can be exchanged for 1.09 USD.
Conversion rates are either fixed or floating:

  • Fixed conversion rates are set by a government or central bank and remain constant.
  • Floating conversion rates or exchange rates are determined by the foreign exchange market and can change due to supply and demand, economic factors, and political events.
  • A conversion rate is the price of one currency in another and also reflects the supply and demand for each currency.

How Do You Calculate a Currency Conversion Rate?

To calculate a currency conversion rate, you need to know the exchange rate between the currencies you are converting. The exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in another. To convert currencies, multiply the first currency’s amount by the exchange rate. For instance, to convert 80 EUR to USD, you would multiply 80 by .92 to get 73.6 USD. To convert USD to EUR, divide the amount of USD by the exchange rate (80 / .92 = 86.9 EUR).

Conversion rate formula

If “a” represents one currency and “b” is the exchange rate, “c” is the money left over after the exchange:
a x b = c and a = c/b.

Google often provides the most accurate conversion rate calculator though there are other free currency calculators online.

Why do currency conversion rates differ between companies?

Banks and other providers often set their exchange rates for currency conversion. These may differ from the official exchange rates.

What does converting the FX rate mean?

The foreign exchange rate is the value of one country’s currency in another country’s currency. This is known as the forex rate or exchange rate. Put simply, it is the cost of exchanging one currency for another.
