What is employee tenure?

Table of contents

Employee tenure is the length of time someone has worked for a specific company. Some employers use employee tenure as a main consideration when hiring employees, while others ask the applicant about their series of short tenures.

What are employee tenures benefits?

Some advantages of employee tenure include:

  • Expertise in a certain role or field
  • Proven loyalty to a company, making candidates more attractive hires
  • Easier to promote internally
  • More leave opportunities as companies trust the employee will return refreshed

Why are tenured employees good for business?

Tenured employees can add a lot of value for companies, especially ones that continue to grow. Here are a few benefits:

  • More productivity: Tenured employees have more experience working for the company and know important protocols, workflows, company goals, and so forth. This helps make them more productive than an employee just starting at a company.
  • Lower costs: It costs companies less money to retain employees than hire new ones. Employers can spend fewer resources training employees, providing new equipment, and getting them settled in.
  • Expertise: Tenured employees have certain expertise they can share. They know the team functions, best practices, and other knowledge that makes them great mentors for new joiners.
  • More motivation: Having team members who have been with the company for a while is motivating for new team members. If everyone is new, employees may feel unstable in their positions and they may feel less motivated to grow in their role.

What are some challenges of employee tenure?

Staying with a company long-term can also have its disadvantages, such as:

  • Slow growth or advancement for some employees in certain positions
  • Complacency, especially if employees aren’t challenged in their role
  • Employee burnout can demotivate other employees or cause the tenured employee to take advantage of working hours or benefits

What is the average employee tenure in the US?

The average employee stays at a company for 4.1 years. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data states that this figure declined 11% (from 4.6 years to 4.1 years) between 2012 and 2022.

Employers can calculate their average employee tenure by subtracting the difference between the employee’s start date and the current date (or the employee’s termination date).
After using this calculation for all employees, employers can find the average by dividing the total amount of days by the total number of employees.

Types of employee tenure

HR professionals usually categorize tenures as either long or short. Here’s a simple explanation of both:

  • Long tenure: With the average job tenure currently around four years, long tenure describes more than five years with an employer.
  • Short tenure: Most employers consider two years or fewer with an employer to be short tenure.
