What does month following invoice mean?
Month following invoice means a customer is expected to pay their dues by the 30th of the month following the invoice issue date. MFI can also indicate that the customer must pay their dues by the 15th of the month following the invoice issue date. Businesses can specify what they mean by writing either “15 MFI” or “30 MFI.”
What’s an example of 15 MFI?
If an invoice is issued on May 22nd with 15 MFI payment terms, payment is due by June 15th. Note that if sellers issue the invoice before the 15th, the invoice payment could be due the same month. If an invoice is issued with 15 MFI on May 3rd, payment could be due May 15th or June 15th. Clarifying payment terms helps ensure businesses don’t fall behind on payment.
What are the benefits of using net 30 terms?
One of the main benefits of net 30 terms is that businesses can take on more clients than if they asked for immediate payment. Offering net 30 trade credit allows companies to cater to other businesses that might not have the funds right away, such as small businesses.
Big businesses may offer clients trade credit terms that are more generous such as net 60, or even net 90. Enterprises will usually have enough cash to survive not getting paid by a client for 60 or 90 days. Offering longer net terms is less limiting when looking for new clients.
What happens if a business is late for an MFI?
Any business will need to make sure they can enforce their payment terms and charge late fees. Including late fee conditions in the invoice payment terms lets clients know that they will be charged a fee for late payments. Late fee charges for unpaid invoices can come out to between 1.5 and 3% interest per month. Checking state laws before including late fee conditions can prevent legal troubles down the line.
What are some payment terms to include?
A few best practices for invoice payment terms are:
- Using respectful language in invoice payment terms
- Setting specific deadlines
- Shortening the payment periods
- Including and enforcing late fees
- Accepting a variety of payment methods
- Rewarding early payment
