What is RPA?

Table of contents

Robotic process automation (RPA) can automate payment processes in finance and accounting, such as invoice processing, data entry, and reconciliation/
RPA finance software bots mimic human actions by working with applications, handling data, following rules, and talking to other systems.

How robotic process automation works

Robotics process automation runs through a preset workflow that gives robots detailed instructions on actions to perform during each step. Once robotic process automation software receives a roadmap, it can autonomously run programs and perform tasks outlined in the requirements.

Many banks and financial institutions use RPA automation tools to open accounts, for KYC processes, anti-money laundering strategies, client request processing, and other recurrent tasks.

4 types of RPA in banking and fintech

1.Verification and validation bots

Bots can take over time-consuming tasks such as reviewing and approving data and prevent human errors.
Bots can also:

  • Make real-time requests to authenticate information for KYC, Customer Due Diligence, and other processes.
  • Reduce human errors
  • Notify an employee about a confirmation issue so can solve it

2. System interoperability robots

Integrating (RPA) financial robots tools can fill communication gaps between systems that don’t usually work together and link customer databases with payment systems to automatically process transactions.
Bots can also:

  • Create more efficient operations
  • Make data flow more manageable
  • Connect older software with new tools to speed up tasks

3.Scheduled robots

Bots can renew licenses or subscriptions at fixed intervals, while also performing tasks according to certain schedules.
Bots can also:

  • Automate routine tasks based on predefined triggers
  • Execute tasks before deadlines without human intervention
  • Complete regular maintenance and compliance checks
  • Automatically generate reports at the end of each month
  • Schedule fund transfers for recurring payments
  • Send reminders for loan repayments based on predefined schedules

4. Data input robots

Robots can automate data synchronization in finance and accounting without needing to spend more money on integration services or other large expenditures.
Bots can also:

  • Automate data entry tasks
  • Copy and paste information between applications without errors
  • Simplify data entry processes and save time on manual data input
  • Automate customer information transfers from online forms to CRM systems
  • Populate loan application forms with the right data.
  • Update inventory records in real-time by syncing data from sales platforms

Examples of RPA in banking

Many financial institutions utilize robotic process automation and artificial intelligence to accelerate processes, reduce costs, and enhance user experiences. Examples include:

Bank of America uses the Pega Robotic Automation solution to connect outdated systems and fill data integration holes without updating the core technology. Robots execute global payments, help clients with card and mortgage disputes, manipulate data, and process exceptions.
Deutsche Bank uses RPA alliance in several areas such as lending operations, tax, trade financing, cash payments, employee training, and others.
Nordea Bank relies on AI-driven solutions to analyze and sort customer inquiries and automatically forward them to the right departments for processing. The financial software also processes hundreds of queries per second for better customer service.

RPA work cycle

Understand the process – Through analyzing existing workflows, RPA software can identify patterns and optimize processes without altering underlying systems.

Define tasks – RPA identifies tasks that are rule-based, structured, and repetitive tasks.

Bot development – It creates bots or robots that mimic human interactions with systems.

Monitor and optimize – RPA bots’ performance is monitored to flag areas for improvement to adapt to the operating environment.

Integrate with existing systems – RPA can integrate with various systems, such as legacy systems, databases, web applications, and so on.

Automate triggers – Employees can set triggers to run at specific times, after a user action, or by external events such as receiving an email or file.
